Will My Boobs Go Back to Normal After Breast Feeding

HAVING a baby means your body undergoes a momentous change and for some women that change is permanent.

A lot of women's bodies are altered forever after giving birth, but the changes don't stop there.

After labour comes breastfeeding, which most but not all women do.

A natural part of reproduction, during pregnancy a woman's breasts will adapt in anticipation of a baby.

Tender breasts are often one of the first tell-tale signs of pregnancy, and they can become sore, swollen and very sensitive.

The hormones released during pregnancy will cause changes to the breasts.

What happens during breastfeeding?

According to the babycenter.com, most women will notice their breasts getting bigger during pregnancy, which can sometimes lead to stretch marks.

A number of maternity and nursing bras are sold to help with tenderness, soreness and leaking breasts.

Changes to breasts during pregnancy

  • Breast growth
  • Veins and pigment changes
  • Bumps on the areola
  • Leaky breasts
  • Lumpy breasts

While most women will report changes, but some don't and that's perfectly natural too.

It doesn't indicate anything is wrong with the pregnancy, just like all women's baby bumps are different – with some barely showing – some women's breasts don't change much at all.

Does breastfeeding make your breasts sag?

When breastfeeding, boobs can become engorged which means they're very full of milk.

This can make them feel tight and painful, and could be due to the positioning and attachment of your baby.

Your midwife should be able to help you if you're having trouble feeding, or you can express some milk by hand to alleviate any pressure.

During pregnancy and after breastfeeding, some women report their breasts look deflated or are saggy.

Babycenter.com says there are a few reasons which could contribute towards this.

These include:

  • A high body mass index (raised BMI)
  • Have had more than one pregnancy
  • Are an older mum
  • Had a large pre-pregnancy bra size
  • Smoke

Part of the reason breasts do sag is because they have no muscle.

They're attached to the muscles of or chest wall by ligaments, called Cooper's ligaments.

These are fairly relaxed which allows breasts to move around.

When you become pregnant, your breasts often get bigger from a combination of increased blood flow and milk coming in.

The website says: "As your breasts increase in size, the ligaments that support them may stretch.

"It's this stretching that may lead to slightly saggier breasts.

"This change will happen regardless of whether or not you breastfeed your baby."

They state that one to two weeks after giving birth, your breasts should return to the size they were during pregnancy.

They'll stay that shape and size once you've been breastfeeding for around 15 months, or when you stop.

Breasts can also return to the size they were before falling pregnant.

The website says: "When you return to your pre-pregnancy weight, your breasts will probably return to their pre-pregnancy size, too.

"Your breasts may not be quite as perky as they were before, particularly immediately after you've stopped feeding.

"But the good news is that in the six months or so after you stop breastfeeding, fatty tissue will gradually replace the milk-producing tissue in your breasts.

If you're particularly worried about your breasts sagging, it's worth investing a good bra which will offer good support.
